‘World Famous Lover’ hit the cinemas this Friday. Touted to be Vijay Deverakonda’s last love story, this one was thought to be an anthology. But it is not. What is it about? Where do the three love stories we saw in the Trailer fit in? Is it worth a watch? Is it the actor’s one of the good films? We tell you all in our review.
Gowtham (Vijay Deverakonda) has been wanting to write an exciting novel. It has been more than a year since he left his job and started living in with his girlfriend, Yamini (Raashi Khanna). Nothing is working for him. Making the matters worse, he is ill-treating Yamini, who is heartbroken that Gowtham is not loving her anymore. She bids goodbye to him. Gowtham, actually, loves her like crazy. He now starts writing a novel out of agony and imagines himself as a worker from a Telangana village and a white-collar employee from Paris. Aishwarya Rajesh and Izabelle are his heroines in these segments.
Vijay Deverakonda plays a character with three shades. The only role that he gets right is of Seenayya, the worker. He tries the villager’s dialect effortlessly and gets his body language absolutely spot-on. As novelist Gowtham, he is just about okay and is not at all appealing for the most part. It’s as if he wanted to do another Arjun Reddy-type role here. The third role sees him delivering an insubstantial act. Raashi Khanna, who gets the maximum number of scenes among the female leads, is melodramatic. She could have been much better. Izabelle is glamorous who does well in an emotional scene. Aishwarya Rajesh is the film’s only consistently good performer. The Telugu-speaking Tamil actress nails the role of a wife who is emotionally victimized by her husband.
Gopi Sundar’s BGM is bland for the most part. The sound actually makes many proceedings look more lifeless than what they actually are, especially in the climax. The songs, however, pass muster. The cinematography (by Jayakrishna Gummadi) works in the Telangana and Paris segments. The indoor scenes could have been much smarter. Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao’s editing is largely smooth.
The equations shared by the characters played by Vijay and Aishwarya are pretty interesting. The Yellandu scenes come with a lot of substance. The denouement of the Vijay-Aishwarya segment holds a message without being preachy. It’s the film’s only layered segment. To an extent, the premise of a novelist trying to discover himself through his characters is appealing. The male lead’s speech in the climax is another plus.
The Paris episodes test the audience’s patience. The love story that unfolds between Vijay and Izabelle lacks conviction. It was very important to get the characterization of Gowtham right. He becomes reckless and undeserving of Yamini’s love all of a sudden. Earlier, he was an eligible bachelor with a pleasant nature. In the absence of a convincing characterization, the segment involving Vijay and Raashi Khanna falls flat. This flaw keeps playing itself out as the film progresses and becomes too glaring in the climax. The rom-com scenes involving the duo in the second half are pointless. In showing Vijay as a brooding character, writer-director Kranthi Madhav squanders away too much of screen time. It seems the actor himself forced the director to get over-indulgent. The dialogues are so superficial that it’s impossible to feel the pain of the characters. It is as if the whole film was an excuse for Vijay to get into different get-ups for the sake of it. The run up to the climax speech is mediocre.
Vijay had said that ‘World Famous Lover’ is going to be his last love story. Jocularly, it can be said that he is frustrated with love stories after watching this movie and that’s why he doesn’t want to do any more love stories. With just 30 minutes of good content, you can’t hope to score a hit, that too in February when movie business is apparently dull.
