Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty, whose tryst with controversies is well known, has finally got relief in a long pending case. The case is regarding the controversial kiss incident in 2007, where in Hollywood star Richard Gere kissed Shilpa Shetty at a public event held in Rajasthan. Richard Gere, who was at his prime then, was visiting India. Smitten by the beauty of Shilpa, hugged her tightly and kissed at an AIDS awareness event, in front of a large gathering. This sudden act of Richard Gere are created a huge furore in the country, with protests occurring across India. Many protests saw burning of effigies of Richard Gere and Shilpa Shetty then.
The main contention of protestors was, Richard Gere has insulted Indian culture by publicly kissing a woman and displaying obscenity. The allegation of protestors against Shilpa Shetty was being an Indian woman she readily obliged for the kiss, instead of stopping Richard Gere from kissing her, thus bringing disgrace to Indian culture. While the case was initially filed in a Rajasthan Court, it was shifted to a Mumbai Court upon Shilpa’s appeal to Supreme Court. Finally Court acquitted Shilpa Shetty in obscenity case this week, saying that Shilpa Shetty has no conspiratory role in the kissing incident and in fact she is the victim of Richard Gere act than a perpetrator of crime.
