Shabaash Mithu Movie Review Rating : 1.5/5

Tapsee Pannu has been trying hard to find a way to establish strong solid market for herself as an individual performer than just a woman lead besides males. That’s a nice thing to happen as different tales with women centric narratives will be explored. Now, she has come up with legendary cricketer Mithali Raj biopic, Shabaash Mithu. Let’s discuss about the film.

Mithali Raj (Tapsee Pannu) doesn’t find support from her family while she wants to become a cricketer. Everyone keep insulting women playing the sport and want to showcase it has men’s sport only. As many keep cricket as “Gentleman’s Sport”, Mithali tries to change that impression. Could she do it? How she did it? Watch the movie to know more.

Biographical Dramas have been the flavor of the season and new one is Shabaash Mithu. Sachin Billion Dreams and MS Dhoni, Dangal have become hits but no other film based on sports person has become a hit in many moons. Still, this movie got made for Mithali Raj, a huge name in Women’s Cricket. Telling her story is important but it doesn’t have so much dramatic value to make a 2 hours movie.

Not every story needs to be shown on big screen. 83 proved it. Even though it had far better writing and far better performances, bigger budget it still couldn’t find audiences. Shabaash Mithu team did not find a positive way to sell the life story of Mithali Raj to say the least. They just wanted to give a woke feministic voice, rather than give Mithali, a legend proper tribute. Indian Cricket in 1995 was not as hugely popular and powerful with cash as today. ICC had England, Australia ruling it and India due to such great players found interest among the common audiences growing. Birth of Cable Television made the sport even more popular in India and such things did play a part in women’s cricket getting attention too. Yes, even today the prejudice exists but not all males look to exploit women or subdue them. The narrative should be a celebratory fun tale not a boring melodrama that doesn’t really know where it needs to find its voice. This one is a miss on all accounts.
