Dhanush Naane Varuven Review Nene Vasthunna Movie Review Rating : 2/5

Selva Raghavan has obtained the name as cult director in Indian cinema. He started his journey with his brother Dhanush as hero in Kadhal Kondein and their combination became iconic as it features films like Mayakkam Enna, Pudhupettai. Dhanush has always reinvented himself in Selva Raghavan films and this combination is back with Naane Varuvean. Movie released with low buzz and considerably low amount of promotions than any recent Dhanush film.

Considering that after a blockbuster film like Thiruchitrambalam, he is coming with this one, this is quite strange and the team stated it as deliberate. Kalaipuli S. Thanu who produced Kabali, Asuran before produced this film. Dhanush did not even give interviews before the film and they have chosen to release at the same time when much eagerly awaited Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponninyin Selvan-1 is releasing, the next day. Let’s discuss about the movie.

Plot:

Prabhu (Dhanush) lives with his wife and daughter at a secluded place, away from all tensions. But his daughter shows signs of possession and he fears about it. The ghost terrifies him and tries to deliver an important note. Prabhu finally, gets the note that ghost has for him. It asks him to kill his twin and estranged brother, Kathir (Dhanush). Why does the ghost want Kathir dead? What is the connection between the twin brothers and the ghost? Watch the movie to know more…

Analysis:

Dhanush aced the characters of Kathir and Prabhu. Kathir has more variation to look upto than Prabhu and Dhanush charmed in the negative character without any kind of inhibitions. He played almost like Good vs Evil within one person’s self. Selva Raghavan is good in his small role. Kids have performed really well and others don’t leave an impact. In few scenes, Dhanush looked like a demon incarnation and Selva seems to have gone for such differentiation between both the characters, even in his framing, staging and presentation. Editing could have been better in the second hour as pattern preferred seems to slow the pace down completely and the flashback doesn’t have too much off interesting portions too.

On paper, this film looks like the best version of this kind of twin-ghost supernatural thrillers. Rather than making one brother, a ghost, Selva has gone for a different choice which makes this movie even more thrilling to watch. At the same time, his good ideas all end in the first hour and second hour seems like it has no where to go. It feels like we are watching the obvious conclusion being delayed for effect and none of the scenes lack any impact. When you consider how Selva Raghavan used to make some scenes or sequences that leave his mark in previous films from this combination, this film looks to pale and disappointing. As a stand-alone film too, it suffers to entertain or engage after a point. While the plot twist engages, the proceedings post that don’t really excite. On the whole, movie wears down the novel point after a great start and if you wish to watch Dhanush’s performance, you can go for it. Otherwise, you may think twice.

Positives:

  • Dhanush’s Performance
  • Gripping First Hour
  • Yuvan’s Music and BGM

Negatives:

  • Pale Second Hour
  • Drag towards Climax
  • Over-stretched Flashback
  • Overcooked Climax
