Netflix makes its most expensive deal in Tamil for Thalapathy 67

Digital rights have become one of the highest sources of income for big-budget films these days. Whenever a star hero film or a big-budget film is gearing up for release, major OTT platforms try to bag the digital rights for a whopping price.
Netflix is one of the leading streaming platforms in India. Generally, it focuses on Bollywood content more than South Indian films. But of late, it realized the importance of South Indian cinema and started spending more money to buy the rights of Telugu and Tamil films.
If the latest grapevine is anything to go by, Netflix just made its highest-ever deal for a Tamil film. As per reports, Netflix bought the rights of Thalapathy Vijay’s next film (Thalapathy 67) for a record price of Rs. 160 crores. This movie is being directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. It is yet to hit the floors. Still, there is a huge craze around it due to the collaboration of Vijay and Lokesh. Thus, Netflix didn’t step back from spending a lot of money to buy digital rights.
Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Video bought the OTT rights of Vijay’s upcoming release Varisu for Rs. 75 crores. Reportedly, Netflix also bought the rights of Ajith’s upcoming release Thunivu for Rs. 65 crores. Going by the trend, we think that OTT deals are going to play major roles in the business of big films in the coming days.
