US box office: VSR opens big, Waltair Veerayya trends well

Nandamuri Balakrishna’s much-awaited commercial entertainer Veera Simha Reddy emerged as his career-best opener in the USA. The Gopichand Malineni directional notched up half a million dollars even before the start of premiere shows to take the biggest opening for Balakrishna by surpassing his previous highest set by NTR Kathanayakudu. It collected $ 473K from premieres. His 2017 historical drama Gauthamiputra Satakarni collected $ 375K gross from its premieres.
Veera Simha Reddy embarked on a sensational note with terrific advance sales two weeks before its release. Perfect planning and solid buzz because of powerful trailers helped the film big time. By the end of Wednesday’s premieres, the total gross is likely to be more than $ 650K which is a very good start for a Balakrishna film in USA. His previous film Akhanda collected $ 334K from premieres and went on to hit the million-dollar mark. Veera Simha Reddy is likely to overtake the lifetime gross of Akhanda in the first weekend itself.
Megastar Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya is poised to take a solid opening as the pre-sales are nearing half a million dollar mark. Trade circles are expecting that the film will end up close to $ 700K by the end of premieres.
Meanwhile, Tamil biggies Varisu and Thunivu started on a promising note in USA. Ajith’s Thunivu grossed $ 235K and emerged as the biggest opener in his career by screaming past Vivegam with $ 213K. His previous film Valimai collected $ 140K from premieres. Due to mixed reports, Thunivu slowed down on its first day as it is nearing the $ 100K mark as of this writing.
Vijay’s Varisu collected $ 147K from their Tuesday premieres and handed over the sixth biggest opening for him. Due to changes in the release date, the premiere numbers got affected as his previous films like Beast and Mersal took a terrific opening with $ 658K and $ 400K respectively. The film secured mixed reports from moviegoers. On its first day, Varisu collected $ 150K till now.
