South films dominate IMDb list in 2022

Renowned Internet Movie Database site, popularly referred to as IMDb, released the list of the top ten most popular films of 2022 and South Indian films have dominated the list with 9 out of the 10 films belonging to Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada. The only Bollywood movie to feature in the list is Kashmir Files.

The Most Popular Films are as follows:

1. RRR

SS Rajamouli’s visual masterpiece RRR, starring Ram Charan and NTR in the lead roles, is the most popular film of the year. RRR saw phenomenal box office success not just in India but transcended the boundaries and emerged as a global blockbuster. The film is now in the race to grab the first Oscars for an Indian film. It secured a rating of 8.0 user rating in IMDb.

2.Kashmir Files

Vivek Agnihotri’s film Kashmir Files, which stirred a lot of emotions and also raked too many controversies, is the second most popular film on the list. Surprisingly, Kashmir Files is the only Bollywood film on the list. It was rated 8.3 by moviegoers.

3. KGF 2

Action saga from Prasanth Neel, KGF 2 stormed the Indian box office and emerged as one of the most viewed films of all time. It got an 8.4 rating on IMDb. The film grossed more than RRR and KGF Part 1 and broke numerous existing records in different territories of the country. 8.4 is the user rating given to this film.

4. Vikram

Kamal Haasan’s gangster drama Vikram is the best-rated Kollywood film of the year with an 8.4 rating. The Lokesh Kanagaraj directional turned out to be a runaway hit at the box office in Tamil and Telugu. It got an 8.4 rating.

5. Kantara

The biggest surprise hit of 2022 is undoubtedly Kantara. Made on a medium budget, the mythological drama with raw and rustic presentation saw huge footfalls because of unanimous reviews and word of mouth and emerged as one of the biggest hits in terms of return on investment. It was rated 8.6 on IMDb.

6. Rocketry: The Nambi Effect

Starring R Madhavan in the lead role, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, was the biopic of scientist Nambi Narayanan. Marking Madhavan’s directorial debut, the film bagged huge critical acclaim. It secured a phenomenal 8.8 user rating.

7. Major

Adivi Sesh’s patriotic drama Major is one of the best biopics of all time. It is based on the doughty NSG Commando Sandeep Unnikrishnan who was killed in the 26/11 attack. The film clocked 100 crores gross including all languages. It was rated 8.2 by users.

8. Sita Ramam

Tollywood delivered another classic this year with heartwarming romantic entertainer Sita Ramam. The Hanu Raghavapudi’s cult romance impressed audiences and critics alike. 8.6 is the rating given to this film.

9. Ponniyin Selvan 1

Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan 1 is another Tamil film that was lapped up by audiences big time. It emerged as the highest Tamil film of all time. It secured a 7.9 rating from viewers.

10. 777 Charlie

Starring Rakshit Shetty, Sangeetha Sringeri among others, this Kannada film by Kiranraj K followed the story of the bond between a dog and a lonely factory worker. It secured the highest rating among all films on the list with an 8.9 rating.
