Telugu actor Chalapathi Rao passes away

While grieving the loss of veteran and legendary actor Kaikala Satyanarayana, who passed away a couple of days ago, another tragedy struck Tollywood as senior character artist Chalapathi Rao breathed his last at his residence in Hyderabad due to cardiac arrest.

Aged 78, Chalapathi is a versatile actor who predominantly appeared in Telugu films for nearly five decades. Born in 1944 in Baliparru , Krishna District of the erstwhile Madras presidency, Chalapathi Rao made his acting debut in 1966 with Gudachari 116. He appeared in multiple roles as a supporting actor, villain, and comedian in over 600 films. He shared screen space with three generations of actors from the times of NTR, ANR, and Krishna to the current crop of top actors. Some of his notable films include Bobbili Brahmanna, Adavi Donga, Ninne Pelladatha, Chattam tho Poratam, Aadhi, Pedarayudu, Yamagola, Kondaveti Simham etc.

Chalapathi Rao shared a very close affinity with legendary actor N. T. Rama Rao who was the reason for his entry into films. Besides acting, Chalapathi also donned the hat of producer He produced seven films in his career. He was last seen in a brief role in Nagarjuna’s Banggaraju. Due to ill health, he was away from acting for the last year.

Chalapathi Rao is survived by his wife and two children. His son Ravi Babu is a noted character actor and director in Tollywood. His final rites will be performed after his daughter reaches India from the USA.
