Netflix scraps Baahubali web series

Here is a sad news for Baahubali lovers. OTT giant Netflix has reportedly scrapped ‘Baahubali: Before the Beginning’ web series midway as creative folks at Netflix were not happy with the way it was shaping up. ‘Baahubali:Before the Beginning’ was planned as a prequel to Baahubali movie series, as Netflix wanted to cash in on the huge appreciation Baahubali franchise has earned. It had planned a web series as a prequel to the Baahubali and initially allocated budget of more than Rs 150 Cr. It was based on Anand Neelakantan’s book ‘The Rise of Sivagami.’

But ever since the birth of idea, this project has run into troubles. Initially Netflix India team had requested Baahubali director SS Rajamouli himself to direct the prequel web series. But Rajamouli rejected the offer as he moved on to direct another magnum opus RRR starring Ram Charan and NTR.

Initially actress Mrunal Thakur was roped in to play the lead role but she backed out of it for reasons unknown. Later Wamiqa Gabbi entered the scene. While Deva Katta was the director in the beginning, even he was out of the project. At one stage Netflix completely re-shot the series with new actors and new director. In spite of all these changes and troubles, the output is said to be not on par with Netflix standards and therefore global OTT platform decided to completely cancel the series. Industry insiders believe that Netflix has lost to the tune of Rs 150 Cr on shelved Baahubali series.
