July Round-up : Box Office woes continue for Telugu cinema

Tollywood has been reeling under back-to-back box office debacles due to low footfalls. After Major and Vikram, no film managed to draw the attention of moviegoers and the ticket windows have experienced a dry spell for the last three months.

Trade circles expected July to change the fortunes of buyers and distributors, but all films which released in the last four weeks failed to make any noticeable impact.

Gopichand’s Pakka Commercial was the first disappointment of July as it failed to live up to the expectations of the audiences. Despite the backing of big production house Geetha Arts and reliable director Maruthi, the film couldn’t collect even average revenues.

Lavanya Tripathi’s madcap thriller Happy Birthday, which made some noise with over-the-top trailers, left no trace at the box office.

Ram’s The Warrior, a cop drama, which carried the biggest expectations among all other July releases fell flat due to the routine narration. The audience rejected the film despite Ram’s heroics.

Naga Chaitanya’s Thank You, the most eagerly awaited film because of director Vikram Kumar and producer Dil Raju, tanked heavily at the box office as it failed to recover even 20% of its investment. Thank You is the biggest debacle in recent times.

Last but not the least, Ravi Teja’s Rama Rao on Duty, which generated good buzz because of action-packed trailers, couldn’t tide over the crisis at the box office as audiences didn’t show any interest in the film.
