South films dominated the USA box office in the just concluded weekend. Tamil biggie Ponniyin Selvan and Kannada film Kantara broke many records by the end of Sunday. Telugu big-ticket film God Father had an underwhelming run and The Ghost utterly disappointed the trade circles.
Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 1 has had another terrific weekend in the USA. The historical magnum opus now emerged as the biggest-grossing Kollywood film of all time by surpassing Rajinikanth’s 2.0. PS 1 collected $ 252K and 372K on its second Friday and Saturday respectively. With an impressive haul of $ 210K on Sunday, the film emerged as all-time highest-grosser in the USA among Tamil films. The cumulative gross is $ 5.6 Million.
Kannada film Kantara emerged as a runaway hit with its terrific run in limited locations. The film collected steady numbers after its release on September 30th and has now secured third place in the list of highest-grossing Kannada films after KGF 2 and KGF 1. The positive word of mouth has helped the film big time in the second weekend as it notched up $ 38 K on Friday, $ 63K on Saturday and $ 50K on Sunday. The total gross stands at $ 340K.
Megastar Chiranjeevi’s God Father managed to surpass the million-dollar mark by the end of Sunday. There is no big jump in the collections during the weekend as expected by the trade circles. The film collected $ 153K on Friday and $ 196K on Saturday. With Sunday’s $ 100K, the film breached the $ 1 M mark but it still has a long way to go for the break-even mark. This is the third million-dollar film for Chiranjeevi after his comeback. His previous film Acharya grossed $985 K in the USA.
Akkineni Nagarjuna’s The Ghost is a complete washout in the USA with just over $ 100 k till now. The film grossed $ 20K on Friday, $ 18K on Saturday and $ 10K on Sunday.
Small film Swathimutyam collected less than $ 50K and will end up as a loss venture for its buyers..
